Miami Associate Katrina Fernandez had the privilege of spending three months on secondment with Dale Underwriting Partners, a Lloyd’s of London syndicate, in London.
Here is what she had to say about this unique opportunity.
What was the biggest professional takeaway from your secondment at the Syndicate in London?
I gained a deeper appreciation for how insurers evaluate risk and manage claims globally. Seeing underwriters, claims handlers, and counsel collaborate gave me a broader perspective on how defense work fits into the larger picture.
How did working in the UK insurance industry differ from your experience in the United States?
In the UK, the market is built on long-standing relationships and networks, with insurers, brokers, and underwriters all located in close proximity. In the U.S., the industry is more spread out geographically, which naturally shapes how connections are built and maintained.
How did the secondment enhance your understanding of the insurer’s internal decision-making process?
I was able to observe how claims decisions are made in real time — weighing business, legal, and reputational considerations. This helped me better understand what information is most valuable for insurers when I’m reporting on cases and advising on strategy.
What strategies from the London team do you plan to bring back to your practice in Miami?
The London team excelled at concise, business-oriented communication. I plan to incorporate that into my reporting and recommendations, focusing not only on legal analysis but also on practical implications and cost efficiency for insurers.
What was your favorite part of living in London outside of work?
Exploring the city’s history and culture. Every neighborhood felt unique, and I loved being able to visit museums, markets, and landmarks on the weekends — and of course, taking quick trips to other parts of Europe, like Sicily and Paris.
And finally—what’s your favorite English slang term you picked up while there?
“Sorted” — a simple way of saying everything has been taken care of.
