Beyond the Claim: A Partner’s Secondment in the London Insurance Market

Tampa Partner Paydon Broeder recently spent time on secondment with a Lloyd’s of London syndicate, gaining firsthand insight into the broader commercial considerations that shape decision-making across the London insurance market.

Here is what he had to say about the experience

1. What was the biggest professional takeaway from your secondment at the Syndicate in London?
The experience broadened my commercial perspective of the insurance industry. Stepping outside of my day-to-day litigation practice gave me greater exposure to the strategic priorities carriers consider beyond any individual U.S. claim or lawsuit. It reinforced the importance of understanding the broader business objectives that influence how matters are evaluated and managed.

2. How did working in the UK insurance industry differ from your experience in the United States?
From a domestic perspective, it can be difficult to fully appreciate the interconnected roles of brokers, underwriters, claims professionals and other market participants until you see a Lloyd’s syndicate operate firsthand. London truly functions as an insurance marketplace rather than a collection of isolated businesses, and observing those relationships in practice gave me a much better understanding of how the different pieces work together.

3. How did the secondment enhance your understanding of the insurer’s internal decision-making process?
One of the most valuable aspects of the experience was seeing how much broader the decision-making process can be. For a Lloyd’s syndicate, the considerations surrounding a claim may extend well beyond the facts of one lawsuit. Market dynamics, broker and underwriting relationships, and the potential business implications of a particular decision can all play a role.

Seeing claims evaluated, investigated and discussed from inside the organization gave me a clearer understanding of the factors that matter most to the carrier and how outside counsel can provide advice that better supports those priorities.

4. What strategies from the London team do you plan to bring back to your practice in Tampa?
Limiting exposure efficiently while remaining prepared to litigate a matter through trial will continue to be central to my practice. The London experience, however, reinforced the value of pairing legal analysis with a strong understanding of the client’s business considerations.

When working with Lloyd’s syndicates and other insurance clients, I plan to be even more intentional about addressing the practical and commercial implications of litigation decisions alongside the traditional legal analysis.

5. What was your favorite part of living in London outside of work?
There was a lot to enjoy. The people were welcoming, and I found the history of the city fascinating. Visiting places like the Tower of London and the British Museum was a highlight, but I also really enjoyed London’s restaurant scene. I became a fan of traditional British food as well — particularly a Sunday roast and banoffee pie.

6. And finally — what’s your favorite English slang term you picked up while there?
“Tickety-boo,” which essentially means that everything is fine, going well or in good order. Someone used it during a meeting, and I had absolutely no idea how I was supposed to respond.
